School Closings & Emergencies

Sometimes, winter storms or other emergencies cause Hopkins Public Schools to close school for the day, delay the beginning of the school day, or close school early.

Decision Making

When making a decision to close schools for the day, start schools late, or dismiss schools early, we factor in existing and predicted weather conditions as well as road conditions to determine the overall safety of our students and staff.


We will notify parents/caregivers of a two-hour late start or full-day school closure as soon as we feel confident in our ability to make that decision. Ideally this would be the night before, no later than 9:30 p.m. If we don't have enough information to make the decision the night before, we will notify parents no later than 5:30 a.m. the day of. Early dismissal from school will be announced approximately one hour before dismissal.

Parent notification 

We will notify parents through our Connect-Ed message system. This will be our school district's primary information resource for parents. Families will receive a phone message and an email, if a family's email address has been entered in our Infinite Campus Portal.

Parents can double-check that the school district has their correct phone numbers and email addresses on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Parents who do not have a login for Infinite Campus should complete the portal request form. Parents can update their contact information on the Parent Portal.

Secondary information sources include the District’s homepage, each school's individual homepage, Facebook, Twitter, and television stations such as WCCO, KSTP, KMSP, and KARE.

Before- and after-school childcare

In the event that we start two hours late, Kids & Co., Stepping Stones, and Stay & Explore will start two hours late from their original start-time. If school is dismissed early, Kids & Co. and Stay & Explore after-school programming will be canceled and you will be asked to pick up your students as soon as you are able.  

Other Considerations 
A decision to close school requires us to make several more decisions about school-related events and activities such as athletics, community education classes, early childhood classes, and renters who use space in our buildings. Because every situation is different, we don't have a standard protocol for these events, and we handle them on a case-by-case basis. More detailed information is posted on our website and on social media. Community education also uses a weather hotline (952-988-4019) to make announcements about closures specific to their programming.
